Moiraine has told the Two Rivers five that it's imperative the Dragon goes to the Eye of the World, but also that she still doesn't know which one of them it is, and that those who aren't the Dragon will die there. How Rand chooses to finally act on these memories he's been hiding is an important part of the reveal. Channeling is a prerequisite to being the Dragon, but it's also bad news for any man who can do it, as seen with the earlier misdirect when Mat appeared to be a man who can channel. It's Rand, manifesting an ability he never knew he possessed, in a desperate attempt to protect his lover. Someone channels, and although Egwene thinks it was her, it's not. The biggest clue, likewise held back until Rand privately considers all the evidence, is what happens to him in the Ways. This is in line with Loial's remarks that Rand's red hair marks him as an Aielman, and even explains why Rand feels a sense of recognition when he first sees Dragonmount. The audience also learns Rand has been silently dealing with something that happened in the first episode: Tam was delirious and reliving the battle out loud, causing him to reveal Rand's adoption and its unusual circumstances. That soldier was Tam al'Thor, whom Rand believed was his father.
